How to Test a REST API: Tools, Methods and Best Practices

October 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Testing a REST API means confirming that for a given request you get the right status code, headers, body and speed. Here is a practical approach.

Start with manual requests

Send a single request and look at the response. Use curl, or paste the URL into the online API tester. Convert any curl command to JavaScript, PHP or Python with the cURL converter.

Add assertions

Turn the eyeball check into a repeatable test. Assert that the status is 200, the response time is under 500 ms, the Content-Type is JSON and a field such as data.id exists.

Test the unhappy paths

  • Missing or invalid authentication returns 401.
  • Invalid input returns 400 or 422 with a helpful message.
  • Unknown IDs return 404.
  • Too many requests return 429.

Organise with collections and variables

Group requests into collections and use variables such as {{base_url}} and {{token}} so the same tests run against staging and production.

Keep testing after launch

Run your most important requests on a schedule as monitors. If a deploy breaks login at 3 a.m., you find out immediately instead of from users.

API24x7 gives you the tester, collections, assertions and monitoring in one place, on the web and in the mobile app.
